way back in february i received a myspace message from a stranger girl named bekka [aka popnz] asking if i would contribute a painting for a show she was putting together in orange county based on candies and sweets. she explained that the show was inspired by sweets because during the great depression and after the war in japan, sugar was considered a luxury.
in america one would only have sweets on their birthday or some special occasion, and in japan sugar was stolen by japanese soldiers on american bases to be sold on the black market! she went on to say that with the economy in its current state, she feels art reflects the luxury sugar once possessed. needless to say, i loved the idea and theme. i have a penchant for donuts as you can see from the above paintings, and quickly offered up my donut daymare portrait:
and tomorrow, three months later, after shopping around galleries and after lots of gathering of artists and organizing and curating, it is all coming to fruition! i can't wait to see the final out come and all the people who come out to see it!!
the show runs til june 21st, so if you can't make it out tomorrow night you have plenty of times to take a peek :P
next weekend is the usual alta dena art bender...i have an outside space this time and actually started working on something new for that show! i hope to do at least one more painting or drawing before the hanging on wednesday...just not sure what yet!
